UPSC application signature (20–100 KB): size rules and how to meet them
UPSC asks for a scanned or photographed signature as a JPG, readable and between 20 KB and a few hundred KB. A phone photo of a signature is usually far too big — and a tightly cropped one can fall under 20 KB or 350 pixels.
The official rule
between 20 and 100 KB
JPG of your signature on white paper, preferably in black ink, between 350 × 350 and 1000 × 1000 pixels. The FAQ allows up to 300 KB; recent notices ask for at most 100 KB, so we aim for 20–100 KB. Some notices ask for three signatures one under the other: check yours.
Not stated by the source: pixel size.

Steps
- Sign on plain white paper with a black pen. If your exam notice asks for three signatures one under the other, sign three times.
- Photograph it from straight above in good light, then choose it here with the UPSC signature preset. Use Adjust framing to crop to the signature, leaving a little white around it.
- Download the file and check on the portal preview that the signature is clearly readable.
Common mistakes
- Cropping so tightly that the image falls below 350 pixels: leave a margin of white paper.
- A shadow from your phone over the paper.
- Signing in a colour other than dark ink, which can be hard to read.
